In Japanese culture, there is little or no demand for second-hand goods. There is, however, a compulsion to own the newest and best. This means that many perfectly good, high-cost, little-used, items are exported. This includes pianos. The UK has been importing used pianos from Japan for many years, primarily the Yamaha U-series pianos. It's been Yamaha's most successful instrument, produced in large numbers over many years. You cannot gauge the age of a Yamaha U series piano by its appearance alone. Virtually all the Yamaha U series pianos imported are finished in black polyester. • are guaranteed to have had domestic use only. Many B and C graded Yamaha U series pianos have had very hard lives in schools and entertainment venues;
• are under 30 years old - usually indicated by serial numbers above 2,000,000;
• have a balanced tone and minimal wear and tear to action, hammers and internal components;
• have a clean and well looked after cabinet without significant marks or repairs;
